HORACE J. "HODDY" MAHON
Horace J. "Hoddy" Mahon of Allenhurst passed away peacefully on Friday, Nov. 25, 2011 at his home. He was born in Scranton, PA and moved to Old Bridge before settling in Allenhurst 35 years ago. He was a graduate of Our Lady of Good Council High School, Newark (where he was inducted in the Hall of Fame n 2009) and received his BS Degree from St. Peter's College, Jersey City. He was a Veteran of the US Army from 1954-1956 and a member of the B Corp All Europe Basketball Team. He played for the Iron Dukes semi-pro team from 1951-1961.
Hoddy was a math teacher and Basketball coach at Immaculate High School, Montclair from 1958-1961, Woodbridge High School 1961-1963. At Orange High School from 1963-1968 where he won the State Championship in 1968 as well as helping the team become number one in the state (27-0) and was named Coach of the Year. He then coached Fordham University from 1968-1969; Essex Catholic from 1969-70, where he won the Parochial A North Championship. He then coached at Seton Hall University from 1970-1982, where he was assistant coach for ten years and head coach from 1981-1982. He then coached at William Patterson College from 1985-1988 and then Upsala University from 1988-1991.
Hoddy was a member of St. Mary's Church in Deal, a member and manager from 1978-1982 of the Allenhurst Beach Club, Allenhurst. He was most proud of raising six children and beating Notre Dame, Princeton, Providence and University of Houston in the same year. In his later years, he enjoyed playing cards and games on the beach with his grandchildren and friends while smoking his cigars.
He was predeceased by his late wife, Rosemary H. Mahon, who died in 1991; his parents, Horace and Celestine Mahon and his two brothers, John P. and Joseph K. Surviving is his wife, Josephine Anzalone, whom he married, 1997; his children: J.P. Mahon and his wife, June of Holmdel, Michael and his wife, Liz of Loss Angeles, CA, Hoddy and his wife, Maria of Basking Ridge, Tracey Mahon of Great Barrington, MA, Trish and her husband Charlie Barlett of Ocean Township, Holly Mahon of W. Allenhurst; two step-children, Sondra and Robert Ridgway of Florida and Diane and Robert Miszkiewwicz of Waldwick, NJ; seventeen grandchildren: Devin, Casey, J.P., Elle, Tanner, Hoddy, Dillon, Jake, Samantha, Sydney, Tyler, Morgan, Kelly, Michael, Lauren, Bobby and R.J.
Visitation will be on Sunday, November 27 from 3 pm - 8 pm in Buckley Funeral Home, 509 Second Avenue, Asbury Park. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday in St. Mary's Church of Deal at 10:30 am. Interment will follow in St. Catharine's Cemetery, Sea Girt.
