Harlan Crews Hodges
SOUTHERN ILLINOIS - Mr. Harlan Crews Hodges, age 91, of Route 6, Murray, Ky., former head coach and professor at Murray State University, died at 6 p.m. Monday, June 6, 1994 at Murray-Calloway County Hospital. He was born in Fairfield, Ill., Nov. 11, 1902 to the late Curt and Ida (Crews) Hodges. He was a member of Murray First Christian Church, Murray Masonic Lodge, Murray Rotary and Murray Lions Club. He was a past president of the Pacific Coast Conference Basketball Coaches Association. He was an inductee into the Sports Hall of Fame at Murray State University, University of Idaho and the Illinois High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame for his coaching record at Frankfort Community High School in West Frankfort. He lettered in football at Southern Illinois University in 1913.
He began his coaching career in 1927 at Harrisburg, Ill., also coaching high school sports at Carrier Mills and West Frankfort, Ill. While at West Frankfort, his team won the Century Holiday Tournament. Also he coached athletics at Rolla School of Mines and Southern Illinois University. His SIU team won the Corn Bowl Game in Naperville in 1947.
In 1948, he became the head basketball coach at Murray State University. As MSU coach from 1948 to 1954, his teams compiled a won-lost record of 109-66. His 1950-51 team won the first Ohio Valley Conference Championship for the school. His 1949-50 and 1951-52 participated in the National Intercollegiate Basketball Tournament, winning second place in 1952. During his tenure, seven players received all-conference honors and three of these were named to the MSU Hall of Fame.
His 109 victories were instrumental in Murray State's attainment of the 1,000 Win Club. Only 73 schools have achieved this feat and MSU is the youngest university to do so.
Coach Hodges left MSU to accept the head basketball coaching position at the University of Idaho from 1954-1960. He returned to Illinois in 1960 as superintendent of the Anna-Jonesboro school district, from 1965 to 1972. He was an associate professor in the college of education at MSU, where he supervised student teachers until his retirement.
In 1993, Coach Hodges was honored at an MSU basketball game for his many contributions to the university and region it serves.
He is survived by his wife, Helen M. Hodges of Murray; one daughter, Nancy H. Darnell and husband Richard H. of Magnolia, Texas; three grandchildren, Richard J. Darnell Jr., Jenny Lee Darnell and Taylor H. Darnell, all of Magnolia.
