Guy Wicks Dies at 65 In Georgia
Guy P. Wicks, 65, former athletic director and coach at Idaho State University, died Tuesday at Atlanta, Ga., after a long illness.
He was at Idaho State from 1931 to 1941 when he accepted assignment as athletic director and coach at University of Idaho where he was graduated in 1925. He later served as student counselor and in recent years was field consultant for Sigma Nu fraternity, visiting chapters around the nation.
Mr. Wicks was born June 8, 1902 in Euglis, Neb., to Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Wicks came to Idaho in 1919. He coached at Genesee, Moscow, and at North Central high school in Spokane before coming to Idaho Southern at Pocatello. In 1931 as basketball coach, he was named athletic director and football coach in 1935.
His athletic teams set good records here, his Bengal basketball team giving him a record of 139 won and 40 lost, while his football teams won 30, losing only 11.
Wicks-coached teams played three times in the national AAU basketball tournament, drawing attention each year with their fine display of precision play. One year the Bengals moved into the quarterfinals and were the last of the college teams remaining in contention.
Mr. Wicks entered Navy service and upon his return to Moscow, coached Vandal basketball but material was lacking and his victories for the Moscow school did not compare with his many successes at Pocatello.
Mr. Wicks married the former Grace Jain. Surviving are his widow; a daughter, Jain, at Kellogg; a son, Don, in military service, brother, Pete, at Coeur d'Alene, and sister, Mrs. Frank Kennison, Hawaii.
Funeral services expected to be at Moscow, are pending.
