First Penn State Grid Coach is Dead at 93
UNIVERSITY PARK - Penn State's first football coach, George W. (Doc) Hoskins, is dead.
The sport was already established when Hoskins came on the scene in 1892 as a physical education instructor and trainer.
He soon won a place in the heart of the players, and eventually was recognized as Penn State's first coach.
He served in this capacity from 1892 until he left to accept a comparable position at Western Pennsylvania University, predecessor of Pitt, in 1896. It was during his stay at Pitt that he played against Penn State in one of their annual skirmishes.
From Pitt Hoskins went to Bucknell, where he served as trainer and coach for many years. In 1912 he joined the Cincinnati baseball Reds and served each spring until 1934 as trainer.
He died in Cincinnati O. at the age of 93.
