Former OSU Hoop Coach Floyd Stahl Dies
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Floyd S. Stahl, a coach and athletic administrator for more than 40 years, mostly at Ohio State University, has died. He was 97.
Charlotte Hargrave of the Wier-Arend Funeral Home, which is handling arrangements, said a cause of death has not been determined. Stahl died Friday at his son's home in Blacklick, a Columbus suburb.
Stahl was Ohio State's basketball coach for eight seasons, from 1950-51 to 1957-58. His team compiled an 84-92 record. Stahl coached the first game at St. John Arena when the Buckeyes' home court opened in 1956.
Stahl, who was born in Grover Hill, gave up coaching to concentrate on his duties as assistant athletic director.
His Dayton Stivers High School teams from 1928 to 1930 were the first to win three straight Ohio state basketball championships.
He joined the Ohio State athletic department in 1930 as an assistant basketball and football coach and became head baseball coach in 1933.
He moved to Harvard University as baseball coach in 1938 and took the additional job of basketball coach there in 1944.
Stahl returned to Ohio State in 1947 as assistant athletic director and baseball coach and remained there until retiring in 1970.
He was a veteran of World War I and attended Ohio Wesleyan University before transferring to the University of Illinois, from which he graduated. He was a member of Ohio State's athletic hall of fame.
Survivors include one son and two daughters.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday at the Wier-Arend Funeral Home. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.
