Longtime W&L Coach Dies
LEXINGTON, Va (AP) - Richard A. "Capn Dick" Smith of Lexington, longtime athletic director and baseball coach at Washington & Lee University, died in a Staunton Hospital. He was 86.
Smih was W&L athletic director from 1921 to his retirement in 1954, coached baseball from 1922-52 and basketball from 1926-30. His best basketball teams posed a 16-2 mark in 1928-29 and 16-4 in 1929-30.
He is survived by a son, Richard W. Smith, an attorney and former mayor in Staunton, and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Sunday in Lexington.
