Former Miami Coach Dies of Heart Attack
ORINDA, Calif. - Bruce Hale, former basketball coach at Miami and later a professional coach, died Tuesday of a heart attack. He was 62.
Hale, who died at his Orinda home, was director of marketing for San Francisco radio station KNBR. He played college basketball at the University of Santa Clara, and his 10-year pro career included stops at Chicago, St. Paul, Minn., Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, Ind.
He spent 14 years as coach of the Miami Hurricanes, where his players included Rick Barry. A successful pro player, Barry married Hale's daughter, Pam. The two have since divorced.
Hale coached the Oakland Oaks of the now-defunct American Basketball Association from 1967-70. He also coached at St. Mary's College in Moraga, Calif., for three years and was community relations director for the Warriors.
Hale is survived by his wife, Doris, a daughter and two sons. Funeral services are scheduled for Jan. 5. in San Francisco.
