William Gardiner, Chief Scout for Washington Wizards, Dies
Funeral services will be held Monday for William "Bill" Gardiner, the chief scout for the NBA's Washington Wizards since 1974 and former basketball coach at Loyola of New Orleans.
Gardiner, 77, died Friday at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge following a brief illness.
A native of Washington D.C., Gardiner was in his 25th season with the Wizards, formerly the Washington Bullets, after spending four years as a scout with the Milwaukee Bucks. The highlight of his career was a championship ring won in 1978 when the Bullets defeated the Seattle SuperSonics in the NBA Finals.
Even though he scouted college talent all across the country, Gardiner was a fixture along press row at LSU and Southern University basketball games during the 15 years he lived in Baton Rouge.
