Obituary - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (March 11, 1950)
Al Wittmer, Ex-Princeton Coach, Dies
Albert Wittmer, 53, former member of the New Jersey Legislature and one-time football and basketball coach at Princeton University, died here yesterday following a heart attack.
His death followed a birthday celebration for him Thursday night at the home of his sister, Mrs. Frank Merriman, 1853 Wittmer Street, Northside.
Wittmer Street was named for Mr. Wittmer's grandfather, George Wittmer, who owned farmland in Brighton Heights through which the street was cut.
A native of Pittsburgh, Mr. Wittmer had been living with his sister since ill health forced him into retirement.
Star at Allegeny High
Mr. Wittmer was an outstanding athlete at Allegheny High school before going to Princeton, where he captained its 1922 intercollegiate championship football team.
He served under Bill Roper as assistant grid coach from 1922 to 1930, when he became head coach for a year. He was also head basketball coach for nine years.
Mr. Wittmer's term as a New Jersey legislator was in the early 1930's.
Wife, Two Daughters Survive
In addition to his sister, he is survived by his wife, Leah Mosley Wittmer, of Princeton; two daughters, Mrs. George Grace, of New York, and Mary Sue Wittmer, of Princeton; and two brothers, Edward and Howard, both of New York.
