Leroy Edwards

Leroy Harry Edwards was born in Crawfordsville Indiana on April 14, 1914. His family moved to Indianapolis where he attended Arsenal Technical High School and became a high school basketball legend.

After high school, Edwards attended the University of Kentucky where he led the freshman team to an undefeated season and the following year, led the varsity to a 19-2 record. Edwards made national headlines by his play and was named to numerous All-American teams. After his sophomore year, he returned home to Indianapolis during the summer and never returned to school. He was married and took a job at a tire company which afforded him the opportunity to play professional basketball.

Edwards became a standout player on the professional circuit and soon signed with the Oshkosh All-Stars of the National Basketball League, a team he remained with until he retired from basketball in 1949. During his years as an All-Star, Edwards was recognized as a star in the league for many years. He also was one of the early dominating big men in professional basketball during its formative years.

Edwards was a salesman for the team's sponser (Hunkel Seed Distributors) and operated his own tavern in Oshkosh. In 1953, Edwards returned to his hometown of Indianapolis and worked as an automobile assembler until his untimely death at the age of 57.
