University Professor Rites to be Held Tuesday Morning
Requiem mass for James J. Kevin, long-time University administrator and faculty member, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the St. Francis Xavier church in Stillwater.
Burial will be in Fairlawn cemetery here. Rosary was Monday night in Strode Funeral home which is in charge of arrangements.
Kevin, 64, died early Sunday in the municipal hospital. In failing health in recent years, he had been admitted to the hospital on Saturday afternoon.
He had been a University staff member for 27 years. He joined the faculty in September, 1935, as an instructor in physical education. He became an assistant professor in 1936 and an associate professor in 1937.
In September, 1940, he was named professor and head of the expanded department of health, physical education and recreation.
He held this post for 22 years until the first of this month when he relinquished his administrative duties but remained on the faculty.
During his long career as an OSU educator he was actively interested in recreational sports and is credited with enlarging the University men's intramural athletic program. He also helped enlarge the departmental curriculum to include health and recreation.
He served several terms as an officer and president of both Oklahoma and southwest HPE&R associations. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and Kappa Delta Pi honorary educational fraternities.
He was an instructor at George Peabody college for Teachers, Nashville, Tenn., and Bay View, Milwaukee, Wis., high school for 10 years before coming to Oklahoma.
Kevin was born in LaCrosse, Wis., attended schools there and obtained a diploma from the LaCrosse Normal school. he later earned a bachelor of science and master of arts degrees from George Peabody college. He also did graduate work at Utah and New York universities.
Survivors include his former wife, Elizabeth and daughter, Kerin, both of Oklahoma City, and son, James, Jr., of the home address, 807 S. Gray, Stillwater.
