Obituary - Decatur (IL) Herald & Review (October 10, 2010)
Jerry Menz, Park District Icon, Dies
Jerry Menz, a towering figure with the Decatur Park District for 32 years, died early Saturday morning in Texas after a brief illness.
Arrangements are incomplete.
Menz, who was born in Peoria, served as recreation director for the Decatur Park District for 22 years before retiring May 31, 1993.
He had a wide-ranging impact on park district programs and is credited for founding the Decatur Park Singers, Greater Decatur Chorale, Young Park Singers, Best of Summer Stock, Storyteller Theater, as well as advancing Decatur as a hub for municipal golf and a variety of organized youth sports.
He was also a longtime basketball, football and baseball official in the Big Ten Conference and was instrumental in creating for Decatur a lasting relationship with Special Olympics.
Friends of Menz are gathering details of his death and formulating plans to honor him. A scholarship in his name was created in January for the Greater Decatur Chorale.
During his retirement, Menz and his wife, Anne, split time between homes in Nantucket, Mass., and the Houston area.
