Former UW Cage Star George W. Levis Dies
MILWAUKEE - George W. Levis, 85, the University of Wisconsin's Big Ten basketball scoring champion in 1914-15, and college basketball player of the year during the 1915-16 season, died Wednesday at Columbia Hospital.
Born in Madison, Levis was an all-star forward on the Central High School basketball team in 1912. At the University of Wisconsin he was an all-American and all-conference forward.
Levis coached basketball and baseball at the University of Indiana from 1920-22 before returning to UW as the assistant athletic director in 1923.
Inducted into the Madison Hall of Fame in 1964, Levis was also a member of the National "W" Club.
Levis is survived by his wife Helen, Shorewood; two daughters, Mrs. Lawrence Brodd, Glendale, and Mrs. Don Booth, Whitefish Bay.
Memorial services will be held at the Frautschi Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Road, Friday at 1:30 p.m. Interment will take place at Forest Hills Cemetery.
