G.F. Barber Dies After Illness
George F. Barber Sr., retired YMCA physical director who devoted his time to health and character building in Knoxville for many years, died at 5:40 a.m. yesterday at Fort Sanders Presbyterian Hospital. He was 67.
He had been in gradually declining health for a number of years.
Mr. Barber had been engaged in insurance work for some time after he retired from YMCA work in 1950. As a youth in school he was a baseball player and starred in volleyball.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruby Barber; son, George Jr., daughter, Mrs. Harry Story, Holston Hills; brother, Charles Barber, a leading Knoxville architect; sister, Mrs. Chase Hutchinson, Tenafly, N.J., and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. today at Rose Chapel, the Rev. J.H. McKinnon and the Rev. Arthur M. Fields Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
The body is at Rose Mortuary.
Mr. Barber was a member of the Kiwanis Club and once a district governor of the organization. He was a lover of the Great Smoky Mountains area and in years past he was active with the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. He was first president of the club, former in 1925.
In addition to his devotion of physical culture, Mr. Barber devoted time to First Presbyterian Church, of which he was a member.
Mr. Barber was a past president of the Southern Association of Physical Directors and was active in bringing the National Volleyball Tournament to Knoxville in 1950 before he retired from his YMCA position. He had been the YMCA physical director for 30 years when he retired. He was given a farewell banquet at the YMCA when he retired and at that time he spoke and assured his friends that he would always be interested in the work and would come back there many times to play volleyball to keep in physical shape.
