Fred Koster, Chairman of Car Dealerships, Dies
Fred C. Koster, chairman and chief executive officer of Koster-Swope Buick and former star athlete, died at 3:30 p.m. yesterday at Suburban Hospital after a heart attack at his office. He was 73.
Koster, of 2539 Trevilian Way, was an outstanding athlete at the University of Louisville. At U of L he was awarded 16 athletic letters, four each in baseball, football, basketball and track. In the 1926 football season he led the nation in scoring with 124 points. A graduate of Louisville Male High School, he was too small to play high school football and weighed only 160 pounds while starring at U of L. He later was assistant football coach at the University.
Koster played professional baseball for 10 years, including one year in the majors with the Philadelphia Phillies. An outfielder, he also played for the Louisville Colonels and the St. Paul Saints in the old American Association.
After his playing days, Koster became one of the top football officials in the South and officiated in 12 bowl games, including the Orange and Sugar bowls. In 1969 he was elected president of the Southeastern Conference Football Officials' Association.
Koster had been active in the automobile business for about 35 years. He was president of Quality Leasing Corp. and Koster-Swope Insurance Agency and past president of the Greater Louisville Automobile Dealers Association.
He had also been president of Kosmar Land Development Co. and vice president of the Bardstown Road Shopping Center and Top Hat Liquors. He was past president of the Louisville Personnel Association, a former Better Business Bureau director, a former member of the University of Louisville Athletic Board, former personnel director at Reynolds Metals Co. and former chairman of the board of trustees for the city of Seneca Gardens.
Survivors include his wife, the former Florence Schuler, and a sister, Mrs. Roy Klein.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Christ United Methodist Church, 4614 Brownsboro Road, with burial in Cave Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at Ratterman's 3711 Lexington Road, from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. today and tomorrow.
