Obituary - Boston Globe (March 24, 1987)
Edward Boyle, owned liquor stores, was longtime basketball referee; 78
Edward J. Boyle of Belmont, retired owner of a chain of liquor stores, and a longtime basketball referee, died unexpectedly Sunday in Boca West Medical Center, Boca Raton, Fla. He was 78.
Mr. Boyle had owned the Boyle's Buy-Rite Liquors, a chain of liquor stores throughout the greater Boston area.
He started the business in the late 1950s when he opened his first store in North Cambridge. Eventually the business grew to include stores in Cambridge, Medford and Danvers. The four outlets are now owned and operated by his children.
Mr. Boyle and the late Msr. George Dowd helped found the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) in the Boston Archdiocese in the 1950s.
Mr. Boyle refereed college football and basketball games, and in 1948 he was among the first referees hired by the newly formed National Basketball Association.
He retired in 1955 and was honored at Boston Garden for his service to college and professional basketball.
In 1959 he was given the outstanding Catholic Layman Award by the late Cardinal Cushing for his service to the CYO and in 1984 Bishop Daley, the former victor-general for the Boston Archdiocese, honored him for his outstanding contributions to Por Cristo - an organization of area physicians who travel to Latin America to treat children.
Mr. Boyle was born in Cambridge and attended St. Mary's Grammar School and Cambridge Latin School.
He had lived in Cambridge before moving to Belmont 40 years ago. He had wintered for many years in Boca Raton.
He leaves his wife, Florence V. (Devine); three sons, Edward J. Jr. of Lexington, and Kevin V. and Terrence A. Boyle, both of Belmont; three daughters, Elizabeth V. Brazier of Belmont, Mary V. Riley of Winchester and Maureen V. Argus of Concord; two brothers, Charles of Florida and James Boyle of Arlington; two sisters, Helen Crowley of Cambridge and Doris Weiland of Belmont; and 11 grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 26, in St. Joseph's Church, Belmont. Burial will be in Belmont Cemetery.
