Widely Known Sports Figure, Carl Burt, Dies at Manchester
WARSAW, Ind. (AP) - Carl W. Burt, 65, widely known Indiana educator and sports figure, died Monday in Murphy Medical Center here. He suffered a stroke Sept. 30 and had been a patient since.
Burt was superintendent of Warsaw Community Schools 23 years before he resigned July 1 to become coordinator of Indiana University's teacher training program in Northern Indiana.
He came to Warsaw in 1943 after 18 years at Manchester College, where he had been athletic director, head football coach and director of teacher training. He also had been a high school and Big Ten athletic official.
A native of Atwood, Ind., Burt attended Illinois, Northwestern and Notre Dame universities.
He is survived by the widow and two sons, Dr. Lorin Burt, executive secretary of the Indiana State School Board Association at Bloomington, and Dr. Robert Burt, resident physician at the Oakland (Calif.) Naval Hospital.
