Jay Quint Flashes Promise in Struggle with Kentucky
Hightower Great in 77-72 Defeat; Overtime BattleKansas University's basketball team lost in overtime, 77-72, to fast Kentucky Monday night in Allen Fieldhouse before about 8,000, but showed enough potential even in defeat to encourage its fans for the games ahead.
Friday, the Jayhawks play San Francisco here in the second half of a doubleheader that also includes Kansas State and Brigham Young crew.
Hightower Brilliant
Had Wayne Hightower gotten a little more scoring help Monday, particularly from the outside, KU could have reversed the score against Adolph Rupp's Kentucky club.
Sophomore Wayne tallied 33 points, his season high, grabbed off 14 rebounds, and earned this comment from distinguished visitor Rupp: "That boy is going to be quite a ball player before he leaves Kansas."
Twice Hightower dribbled the length of the court to score layups, and on another occasion, he stole the ball almost at midcourt and drove in for the markers. Early in the second half, he took over the pivot duties and banged through three quick baskets.
The regulation game ended 66-66 after Kansas had trailed 34-27 at halftime.
Hickman Shot Does It
Bob Hickman sent it into overtime when he hit on a long jump shot from the side with 20 seconds remaining, and then Sitcky Bob put the defensive clamps on Kentucky's Sid Cohen in the final seconds to prevent a last-ditch shot try.
Bill Bridges picked off 23 rebounds, but managed only eight points, all of them in the first half. Hightower got 23 points after intermission.
Ned Jennings paced the Kentucky crew with 27 points and 11 rebounds.
It was strictly a game of playing catch-up for KU, with Kentucky shooting into a quick lead, Kansas going ahead at 35-34 after the Cats led 34-27 at the half. Again the Jays fell back, but deadlocked the activity at 51-51, then went ahead 62-61. The pressure of the catch-up game finally told, however, particularly in the overtime when the 'Cats used excellent free throw shooting to pull away.
KU Shooters Frigid
Kansas hit on only 29 of 92 shots for 31 per cent, while Kentucky shot 38 per cent from the field. In the first half, Kansas hit only 18 per cent from the field, Kentucky 30 per cent.
Kentucky used a race-horse offense, picked Kansas up at the middle of the court on defense and often used a double screen to break open its shooters.
Kentucky, 2-2 going into the game, would have dropped below .500 per cent in the won-lost column for the first time since 1927 had Kansas turned the trick. KU is now 3-2.
First Appearance Here
It was Kentucky's first appearance in Lawrence and only the second time the two schools have tangled. Kentucky now owns a 2-0 mark over KU.
The Jayhawks missed some easy shots, then blew at least three excellent chances with bad passes. Actually, the Jays outrebounded Rupp's club 65 to 52, thanks mainly to Bridges and Hightower's hustling on the boards.
But KU shooters are better than 31 per centers, and the Jays should correct their deficiencies, particularly on passing. When that happens, Kansas will be a sound club, capable of beating any opponent.
That day shouldn't be too far in the distant future.
Kansas' Bill Bridges (#32) and Jim McDonald (#21) fight for a rebound. McDonald was called for a foul by referee Max Macon. Also seen are UK's Don Mills (#53) and Ned Jennings (#13)
