Wildcats Barely Beat Centre, 30-20
Combs Takes Leading Role in Featureless Victory Over Colonels
Kentucky may have a championship team, but you will never make anybody who saw the Wildcats beat Centre College, 30 to 20, last night, believe it. The Wildcats put up the worst game they have played this season, Georgia Tech included, and safe to say if there isn't a radical change somewhere in their machine between now and the night they play their first game in the Southern Conference tournament, they had just as well stay at home and save train fare.
No one will doubt that Kentucky has the material with which to play championship basketball, but the team work of this material last night was negligible. It was so crude that for anyone to think that they could win anything more than a state championship - possibly - would be an absurdity. When they had a chance to make a long pass while Centre's defense was disorganized they pass the ball the other way, and when they had a chance to score a crip while the Centre boys looked on they generally missed the hoop a mile or stumbled before they could get to the basket.
Nearly Waited Too Long
A waiting style of offense may be all right at times, but Kentucky came near losing a basketball game - and to Centre - by waiting too long last night. Kentucky scored a big majority of her points via the crip route, with Combs taking the leading role. Few came by way of the delayed offense, for Centre was too smart for this old stuff and generally broke the bounce pass up. Most any team can check another quintet's offense if the offensive team allows the other to get set all the time and fails to take easy shots offered to them in the run of a game.
It may be the boys and it may be the system. It may be it is both. We do know that there is a "n****er in the woodpile somewhere," and that this person must be given the gate before many days have elapsed.
Kentucky started the scoring and ended it, but in the interim Centre was scoring just one less field goal, 10 to 9 to be exact, and the Wildcats were using a questionable mode of play.
One thing may be said about the Wildcats however. They did sink the free throws, and this is what won the game for them. Had they not made an unusual majority of these gratis throws and had not Staley and O'Neil been chased from the game early in the second half via the personal foul route we are afraid to think what would have happened to our wonderful Wildcats last night.
Combs Makes 19 Points
Combs was Kentucky's offense. He scored three field goals and three free throws in the first half and four field goals and two fouls in the final period to lead the offense with 19 points. Jeffries counted one in each half and McBrayer got the other. Jeffries took the leading role in passing to Combs and outside of the latter players, Jeff probably showed best for Kentucky.
Deaton and Maggard led Centre's offense, Maggard making some extremely unconscious shots. In one instance, Maggard stood on the sideline and hooked a pretty field goal that brought a roar from the crowd. Staley was heard and shoulders above McBrayer and Milward when it came to centering. The Colonels used a waiting offense, like Kentucky, and this made the game slower than sorghum molasses.
May we never see another one like it !
