'Cats Defeat Vols, 35 to 22
University of Kentucky Basketball Team Outclasses Tennessee in Thrilling Contest on Knoxville Floor
The University of Kentucky defeated the University of Tennessee tonight in the fastest game of the season by a score of 35 to 22. It was Kentucky all the way with the Wildcats taking the lead at the very outset and maintaining a comfortable margin in throughout the combat. The visitors rolled using a nine-point lead before the Volunteers score a single point, and the half ended with Kentucky on the long end of a 21 to 11 count.
A spurt at the beginning of the second period carried Tennessee to within six points of the fast sailing 'Cats, but McFarland and Helms got back on the job and the score was boosted in their favor. Kentucky mixed long shots with short ones very effectively. Milward batted in several close ups, while Captain McFarland and Underwood made good on numerous shots from well past the 17-foot line.
Albert and Helm also played well, not showing as much as the others, but following the ball consistently. Carey played a steady game at back guard, but Kentucky's offense was better than its defense tonight.
Kentucky won the game under the basket and at center. Milward continually got the jump. Kentucky players coming up fast and taking the tip. The visitors also showed the best form on their shots. The passing of the two teams was smooth. With honors about even on that score.
Tennessee was not only weak on its numerous shots from the field but missed no ends of free throws making good only seven out of a possible 18 chances. Keister, Harkness and Bowe did the best for the Volunteers.
Game Writeup - Knoxville Journal
WILDCATS GARNER EARLY LEAD AND NEVER HEADED
Vols Play Better Floor Game Than Against Centre But Wildcats Defense Prevents Many Crip Shots; Billy Harkness and Captain Earl Keister Are Stars For Orange and White; McFarland Leads Visitors.
A ten point lead garnered by the Kentucky Wildcats before Tennessee realized a cage duel was in session, was never headed and the Orange and White went down in defeat in Jefferson Hall last night, 35 to 22.
The Vols played a much better game against Kentucky than when they encountered Centre here last week. The half ended 21 o 11 in favor of the visitors, who were held in check better the second half, but Tennessee's offense did not accelerate sufficiently to overcome the margin.
Again Billy Harkness and Captain Earl Keister proved Tennessee's mainstay, with Schulz coming in for honors. Captain McFarland and Milward shared the limelight for Kentucky.
Immediately after the game Coach A.A. Stagg, of the University of Chicago, made a brief speech, praising the superior sportsmanship shown by the two teams in comparison with that exhibited in the Western conference.
Coach Stagg stressed the need of a gymnasium at Tennessee which would be in keeping with the beauty and size of the school and of Knoxville. He frankly admitted the accommodations at present were not what they should be.
