Obituary - Carl Staker, President of Osborn Engineering, Cleveland Plain Dealer (November 13, 1991)
Carl Staker was president of Osborn Engineering Co. fro 1972 to 1979. During his 32 years with the company, he worked on the construction of stadiums and office buildings across the country.
Mr. Staker, 71, of Lyndhurst, suffered a heart attack and died Monday at Hillcrest Hospital.
He was born in Maysville, Ky. He attended the University of Kentucky on a basketball scholarship and was captain of the team that was the school's first to qualify for an NCAA national tournament. Mr. Staker was awarded three varsity letters for basketball and three for baseball.
He also was inducted into the engineering and physics honor societies and served as president of the student chapter of the American Society of Engineers. He was voted the most popular man on the University of Kentucky campus.
Mr. Staker graduated magna cum laude in 1941.
He began working for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in Akron in 1942 and played on the company's team in an industrial basketball league. He entered the Navy and served as an officer in an antisubmarine unit in the South Pacific during World War II.
Mr. Staker did graduate work at Case Institute of Technology after he was discharged in 1946, then joined Osborn a year later.
Projects that he worked on included Milwaukee County Stadium, Robert F. Kennedy Stadium in Washington D.C., chemical plants and major office buildings.
Mr. Staker became a vice president at Osborn in 1960 and president in 1972. He also was a director of the firm.
He was president of the Cleveland Society of Professional Engineers in 1971. He also served as president of the Engineers Foundation of Ohio.
Mr. Staker was a frequent golfer and a deacon at Lyndhurst Community Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy M.; daughters, Robin L. Quigney of Mentor and Sally A. Buchanan of South Euclid; sons, Jeff C. of Northfield Center Township and Paul E. of Lyndhurst; six grandchildren; and a sister.
Services will be a 11 a.m. Friday at Lyndhurst Community Presbyterian Church, 5312 Mayfield R., Lyndhurst.
