Obituary - Ex-Farmer's Tobacco Warehouse President James Sharp Dies at 85, Lexington Herald-Leader (April 9, 1993) by LHL Staff
James M. Sharp, 85, former president of Farmer's Tobacco Warehouse, died Wednesday at the Christian Health Care Center.
Mr. Sharp, a farmer, was president of the warehouse from about 1950 until he retired in 1970.
An avid fisherman, Mr. Sharp was as well known on the lake as he was on the farm.
In the 1950s, Mr. Sharp and a friend, G.L. Burns, devised a method for deepwater bass fishing. Suspicious of their big catches, fish and game wardens followed the pair, but found nothing illegal - just the Doll Fly baits the two made for fishing the waters of Dale Hollow and Norris Lake in Tennessee. AS the Doll Fly caught more and more fish, other fishermen caught on, and he lure remains popular today.
Mr. Sharp, a Fayette County naive, graduated from Lexington High School and attended the University of Kentucky, where he was a member of the 1925-26 basketball team.
Mr. Sharp was a member of Woodland Christian Church and the UK Alumni Association.
He is survived by his wife, Lucy Johnson Sharp; four sons, James M. Sharp Jr., and Brown J. Sharp of Lexington, Robert L. Sharp, Tazwell, Tenn., and Stephen P. Sharp, Naples, Fla.; one daughter, Lucy Sharp Dikeou, Denver; one sister, Ethel Anderson, Naples Fla.; and 12 grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday a Kerr Brothers Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. today. Contributions are suggested to Woodland Christian Church.
