Obituary - Alonzo Nelson, Richmond (KY) Register (December 3, 2010)
RICHMOND Ñ Alonzo Bailey Nelson, 83, of Richmond, passed away Wednesday, December 1, 2010, in his home.
He was born December 15, 1926, to the late Stafford Gibson ÒDocÓ Nelson and Lena Rivers Nelson. He was a retired Personnel Director of the Bluegrass Army Depot and a member of the Richmond Church of Christ.
Alonzo loved to fish and play golf, but most of all enjoyed all of his grandchildren. He played basketball at the University of Kentucky under Coach Adolph Rupp, before being drafted into the U.S. Army. After returning from the service, he enrolled at Eastern Kentucky University, where he played baseball under Coach Turkey Hughes. He was later drafted by the St. Louis Browns to play professional baseball before returning to Richmond.
He was preceded in death by: his wife, Doris Miller Nelson. Alonzo is survived by: one daughter, Tina Nelson Cain (Jesse); one son, Barry Nelson; one brother, Stafford Nelson; and one sister-in-law, Ruth Howell, all of Richmond. He also leaves: five grandchildren, Ryan Nelson Smith (Andy), Michael Nelson (Jamie Dryden), Todd Cain (Julie), Tad Cain (Nikki) and Tyler Cain (Lauren); and six great-grandchildren, Tatum Nelson, Mitchell, Addison, Harper and Andrew Cain, and Ann Bailey Smith.
Services will be conducted at noon p.m. Saturday, December 4, 2010, at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home, with Bro. Mike Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at the Madison County Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Todd, Tad, Tyler, and Mitchell Cain, Ryan Nelson-Smith, Andy Smith and Michael Nelson. Honorary bearers will be members of the ÒROMEO Club,Ó Buddy Roberts, Stafford Nelson, Gary Sparks, Ewell Cobb and Jesse Abrams.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time on Saturday at Oldham, Roberts & Powell.
