Obituary - 'Capt.' Donan Dies Suddenly, Providence Journal Enterprise (December 28, 1967)
A native of Hart County, he was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. D.C. Donan and came to Providence in 1908 as a civil and mining engineer. A graduate of the University of Kentucky in 1907, he came here to work for the Providence Mining Company and was the last survivor of the original executive of the company. He later was superintendent of Providence Mining Company No. 2 and No. 3 and also Luton Mines.
He picked up the nickname and rank of Capt. when he organized Company F of the National Guard in Providence and then served in World War I in France.
He also coached the first football team in Providence and managed baseball teams and played baseball for several teams in the community.
He was married in 1910 to Elizabeth Sugg of Morganfield. He is survivied by his wife and nieces and nephews.
Services were conducted Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Melton Funeral Home with the Rev. C.W. Duncan and the Rev. R.T. Mitchell officiating. Burial was in Lakeview cemetery in Providence.
