C.E. Carmack, Ex-Teacher, Dies
Claude E. Carmack, 83, a retired schoolteacher and former newspaper reporter, died at 12:45 p.m. Saturday at Kentucky Baptist Hospital. He lived at 1900 Washington Blvd.
He joined the faculty at Male High School in 1928 and taught English there until his retirement at 70 in 1952. Unhappy about being forced to retire, he joined the faculty at Kentucky Military Institute in Lyndon and taught there until 1963. He then taught a year at Louisville Country Day School.
A native of Madisonville, he was graduated from Georgetown College in 1908. Later, he taught and was principal at Trenton Elementary and High School, Trenton Ky.
Reporter on City's Newspaper
In 1915 he became a police reporter for The Courier-Journal and later for The Louisville Times. In 1920 he was boys secretary for the YMCA and later, for seven years, was a regional executive of he Boy Scouts of America.
Carmack was a deacon of Crescent Hill Baptist Church. He held the Silver Beaver award of the Boy Scouts.
Survivors include his widow, the former Lois Axton; three daughters Mrs. Charles Riger Jr., McLean Va., Mrs. E.N. Hart Jr., Owensboro, and Miss Marth Carmack, San Francisco, and nine grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Crescent Hill Baptist Church. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park. The body is at Herbert C. Cralle Funeral Home, 2428 Frankfort.
