W.C. Raftery, Ex-Athlete, Coach, Dies
William C. Raftery, father-in-law of Angus E. Peyton, an administrative assistant to Gov. Smith, was buried Saturday in Lexington, Va.
Mr. Raftery, who had coached three sports at Washington and Lee University and at Virginia Military Institute, died Friday at his home in Ashland Va. He was 76.
Mr. Raftery was graduated from Washington and Lee where he was named to the All-Washington and Lee football team in 1935 by noted sports writer George Trevor.
A former resident of Richmond and Waynesboro, Va., he moved to Ashland in 1948 where he became associated with the Van Pelt and Brown Pharmaceutical firm. He retired in 1960.
Besides his daughter, he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Champe Raftery; sons, Champe of Phoenix, Ariz.; and Thomas M. of Ruther Glen, Va.; and another daughter, Mrs. Robert E. Kragle.
