Maher, Ex-City Prep, Notre Dame Grid Star, Dies
William (Red) Maher, former Madison High school and Notre Dame football star, died unexpectedly Monday (Sept. 3, 1962) in Park Ridge, Ill., after apparently suffering a heart atack.
Maher was a star halfback at old Madison High school in 1918-19 and was one of the nation's leading broken field runners at Notre Dame in 1921-23. He was especially dangerous on kickoff and punt returns.
Funeral services will be Thursday in Park Ridge.
Madison survivors include a brother, Bernard, of 1129 Sapight St., and a sister, Mrs. James McGeever, of 17 S. Hancock St.
Other survivors include another sister, Mrs. Stanley Walsh, of Davenport, Ia., and a brother, Frank, of Detroit, Mich.
Maher, about 60, was engaged in radio work at the time of his death.
