Ex-Tulane All-American Dies at 63
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Vernon Haynes, 63, of Metairie, former All-American football player at Tulane and a Jefferson Parish schools assistant superintendent since 1969, died Tuesday.
Haynes was a member of the Tulane team which played in the Rose Bowl in 1932.
He served on the first Jefferson Parish Council from 1958-60.
Haynes coached at New Orleans high schools in the early 1930s, taught in the Ouachita Parish school system from 1935-40, and was coach and athletic director at Louisiana College in Alexandria from 1940-41.
He served on the Tulane coaching staff from 1941-49, was coach and athletic director at a Newport News, Va., school from 1949-51, and joined the Jefferson Parish school system in 1951 as a teacher and coach at Metairie High School.
