'Doc' Sermon Dies; Former State Coach
Dr. Raymond Rollins Sermon, former director of athletics at North Carolina State, died Tuesday afternoon at his home here at 115 Brooks Ave. He was 71.
He came to Raleigh in 1925 as backfield coach of the football team, head track coach and team physician for all athletic teams at State.
"Doc" Sermon was largely responsible for the Southern Conference basketball tournament being moved from Atlanta to Raleigh in 1933. He served as chairman of the conference's tournament committee for many years.
He retired from the college in 1940 and practiced osteopathy here until March of this year when his health began to fail.
Dr. Sermon was a native of Independence, Mo. He graduated in 1917 from Springfield Mass. College where he starred in four sports and was captain of the football team. He took a degree from the American School of Osteopathy at Kirksville, Mo, in 1924, and coached at Rolla School of Mines for one year before coming to Raleigh.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruth Robertson Sermon; and a brother, William H. Sermon of Independence.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. today at Brown - Wynne Funeral home by the Rev. W.W. Finlator, pastor of Pullen Memorial Baptist Church. Burial will be in Warrensburg, Mo.
