Obituary - Waterloo (IA) Courier (July 18, 1982)
Former Hawkeye Captain
Ralph "Buzz" Hogan, who died last week in Mesa, Ariz. where he had been living, is a legendary testament to the fact that all star athletes who came out of Osage High were not wrestlers.
Hogan captained the University of Iowa basketball team his senior year in 1927 after playing on an Osage High team that won the Iowa state high school championship in 1923.
A guard, he also was a letterman on the 1926 team that tied for the Big Ten Conference title with a 12-5 season record.
Hogan also participated in football at Iowa from 1924-26.
His coaching career after he received his bachelor of science degree in physical education in 1928 included a period at Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh.
Hogan was an Iowa basketball teammate of Leonard Raffensperger, who later became head football coach at Iowa after a successful high school coaching career at Reinbeck and East Waterloo.
