Man Was College Athletic Director
Presley Askew, a former coach and athletic director at New Mexico State University, died Monday (Feb. 7, 1994). He was 84 and had lived in Las Cruces 41 years.
He had been head basketball coach, head baseball coach and athletic director with NMSU before retiring in 1965, and had been head basketball coach at the University of Arkansas from 1948 to 1952.
NMSU named its baseball and softball complex Presley Askew Field.
He had received merit and honor awards from the National Association of Basketball Coaches and was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame and Helm's Baseball Hall of Fame.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Alice; his daughter, Margery Askew; and his son, Presley F. Askew.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Graham Mortuary of Las Cruces. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
