Cowles Dies
Ozzie Cowles, former longtime Gophers basketball coach, died Friday in Gainesville, Fla., at age 98.
Cowles was named the Gophers' basketball coach before the 1948 season after coaching at Michigan for two seasons and winning a Big Ten title in 1947-48. Before coaching Michigan he took Dartmouth to the NCAA finals. At Minnesota, Cowles compiled a 147-93 record in 11 seasons and brought back sellout crowds for Gophers basketball games.
He invented the control style of basketball and coached Whitey Skoog, who was the first Gopher to use the jump shot. "He was not only a great coach but a great leader," said Wally Salovich, who played for Cowles. "He helped his players become better citizens and to do well in the business world once they got out of school."
Services for Cowles will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mark's Cathedral across from Loring Park.
