Norman Shepard, Basketball Coach
SARASOTA, Fla. (UPI) - Norman Westbrook Shepard, who coached the University of North Carolina to a 1924 national basketball championship the year after graduated from college, died at his Sarasota home Sunday night.
That first coaching season for the Basketball Hall of Fame member marked the start of a career which took him to Harvard University for 20 years as both a basketball and baseball coach.
Shepard, who was 80 when he died also served as basketball coach and athletic director at North Carolina's Davidson and Guilford Colleges, and at Randolph Macon College in Virginia.
He is survived by his widow, Edith, and a daughter, Mrs. Edith Reepe of Dammen, Norway.
