Nelson H. Norgren, Grid Star
Memorial service for Nelson H. Norgren of Mill Valley, a former All-American football player, coach and physical education professor, will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Mill Valley Community Church.
Norgren, of 76 Montford Avenue, died Tuesday at a local hospital after a long illness. He was 83.
Norgren taught physical education, was head coach in baseball and basketball and an assistant football coach of the University of Chicago, his alma mater.
While an undergraduate, he was right halfback under legendary coach Alonzo Stagg and was named to Walter Camp's All-American teams in 1912 and 1913.
He also played basketball, baseball and track and won a letter in all four sports during three years of varsity competition. Norgren was named to the Helms Athletic Foundation Hall of Fame as a basketball player and was elected president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches in 1942.
Norgren became athletic director at the University of Utah following his graduation, a post he held four years before becoming an Air Force flyer during World War I.
After the war, he returned to the University of Chicago as an assistant football coach under Stagg and began his 36-year tenure as a coach and professor at the school.
His career in sports was interrupted during World War II, when Norgren served as a combat intelligence officer in the Air Force.
Upon his retirement in 1957, he and his wife, Katherine, moved to Mill Valley. The couple was married 57 years.
Norgren, a native of Massachusetts, was a member Mill Valley Post 284 of American Legion.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Natalie N. Carroll of San Francisco; a brother, Lewis G. Norgren of North Carolina, and one grand-daughter.
