Obituary - ESPN Classic (November 19, 2003)
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Ned Wulk, who directed Arizona State to nine NCAA tournament berths and a 406-272 record in 25 seasons as Sun Devils' coach, died Saturday night. He was 83.
Wulk, who had Alzheimer's disease, died of cancer, school officials said.
He coached the Sun Devils from 1958 to 1982, with players who included Byron Scott, Lafayette Lever, Joe Caldwell, Lionel Hollins and Kurt Nimphius. The court at Wells Fargo Arena was named "Ned Wulk Court" in 1999.
Wulk's Sun Devils won their first 20 home games after the arena, then known as the University Activity Center, in December, 1974, and finished his career with a 94-24 record there. When Wulk retired, he was one of only four coaches who had won 400 games at the same school.
His teams were one victory away from the Final Four three times -- in 1961, 1963 and 1975.
Wulk was born in Marion, Wis., on Aug. 14, 1920 and graduated from La Crosse State Teachers College.
His coaching career began at Xavier as freshman football coach, freshman basketball coach, varsity baseball coach, physical education teacher and intramural director, then became an assistant coach for the varsity basketball team.
Wulk served as president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches in 1978.
He was inducted into the ASU Hall of Fame in 1982 and Pac-10 Hall of Honor in 2003.
Wulk is survived by his companion Evelyn Gilmartin, son Greg Wulk, daughter Stephanie Weurding, five grandsons and a great-granddaughter.
