Former Hawkeye, 'Fabulous Five' member Sharm Scheuerman dies
by Scott Dochterman
Milton "Sharm" Scheuerman, a member of Iowa's "Fabulous Five" in the 1950s and later the school's head basketball coach, died Monday night according to the Quad City Times following a long battle with cancer.
Scheuerman, 76, helped lead the Hawkeyes to back-to-back Big Ten titles and Final Four appearances in the mid-1950s. Scheuerman was a two-year starter and averaged 6.8 points as a junior in 1954-55 to help Iowa to its first Final Four. He was named second-team all-Big Ten that season.
In his senior season, Scheuerman scored 22 points to beat Kentucky to take the Hawkeyes to their second straight Final Four. Iowa reached the NCAA title games before the Hawkeyes were defeated by San Francisco and future NBA Hall of Famer Bill Russell. Scheuerman averaged 10.1 points a game that season.
Iowa won 17 consecutive games that season, the second-longest streak in school history. Scheuerman had his No. 46 jersey retired, like the rest of his "Fabulous Five" teammates. He's one of nine players in Iowa history to have his jersey retired.
Scheuerman, a Rock Island, Ill., native, stuck around Iowa as an assistant and took over as head coach at age 24 when Bucky O'Connner was killed in a tragic car accident. Scheuerman led Iowa for six seasons, compiling a 72-69 record before resigning at age 29 after the 1964 season. He coached three-time Iowa MVP and second-team All-American Don Nelson - the NBA's all-time winningest coach - during his tenure.
Scheuerman later broadcast Iowa basketball games. He moved to Denver and was involved in a Christian-based business before his death.
