Honaker Dean of Football Coaches
MARYVILLE, Tenn. (NEA) - With Amos Alonzo Stagg finally retired, folks in East Tennessee say Lombe S. Honaker is the dean of football coaches.
Honaker, a 68-year-old native of Wytheville, Va., started his 36th year as head man at Maryville College, a Presbyterian school, this fall. He has coached college football since 1918.
A graduate of Roanoke, Va. College, where he excelled in all sports, Honaker started coaching at Huntingdon, Tenn., High, the only high school team he ever drilled. After a couple of years he moved to Southwestern College in Texas for two campaigns.
Honaker's Maryville teams have won 160 games, lost 90 and 18 others ended in ties.
One of the highlights of his long tenure came last month when members of the Football Writers' Association of America selected him to receive that organization's annual award to an outstanding small college coach.
