John Garrison: Veteran Grid Coach Dies
HOUSTON (AP) - John Garrison, 56, veteran Texas high school football coach, died Tuesday.
Garrison, who retired from coaching this year after a 30-year career, recently had been released from a hospital after suffering a heart attack.
He was a quarterback at Eastland and played in the Texas High School coaches' first All-Star football game in 1936.
He played halfback at East Texas State and after his college career he entered the coaching ranks.
He coached at White Oak, Electra, Galveston Ball, Spring Branch and Spring Woods high schools in addition to serving as an assistant at Tulsa University.
When Spring Woods High School opened in 1964, Garrison became the school's first head coach.
After coaching the South All-Stars to a smashing 65-0 victory over the North in last summer's THSC Classic, Garrison retired to enter the administrative field in the Spring Branch Independent School District.
Survivors include the widow and three children. Funeral services were scheduled here this afternoon.
