Ex-Xavier Coach, AD McCafferty Dies at 90
Jim McCafferty, 90, former basketball coach and athletic director at Xavier, died Monday in Seattle.
He suffered a broken hip in January at his home in Cincinnati and after surgery, went to live near his daughter Bridget and her husband, Jeff Rogler.
The 6-foot-8 McCafferty called "Big Jim" by his friends, coached the Musketeers to the 1958 the National Invitational championship. In 1962, under McCafferty, Xavier earned its first NCAA Tournament berth.
In 1963, Xavier won the National Catholic Championship, and McCafferty retired from coaching to devote full time to his duties as athletic director. McCafferty served as the school's athletic director from 1962 to July 1979. At that time, he was named Assistant Vice President of Student Development at Xavier.
In 1980, he was named commissioner of the Midwestern City Conference, a conference that he had worked tirelessly to establish for several years.
McCafferty was an innovative strategist. He became most known for his "single-guard" offense and his "zone offense." He took pride in never having lost to any opponent who played a zone defense against his teams and never having lost a game in Madison Square Garden.
In 1938, McCafferty enrolled at Loyola University of the South on a football scholarship. After he won a letter as a sophomore, Loyola dropped football.
McCafferty remained at Loyola, starring on the Wolfpack basketball team for three seasons. As a senior, he was the team captain and led Loyola to the Dixie Championship.
He received his bachelor of science degree in physical education in 1942 and immediately embarked upon his coaching career as assistant coach in both basketball and track for five years before coming to Xavier.
McCafferty twice led Loyola to the NCAA tournament. In 1948, he coached a team of collegiate all-stars to the championship of he Central American Olympic Games in Panama, and the U.S. State Department sent him on a tour of Cuba one summer to conduct track and basketball clinics.
