H.L. Cramer Dies at 69
Insurance Agent Active in Civic Affairs
Herbert L. Cramer, 69, of 1932 Brookmeade Dr., general agent for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co., since 1931 and long active in civic affairs, died at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Mr. Cramer apparently suffered a heart attack as he was descending the stairs of the Northwestern agency office at 419 W. Jefferson Blvd. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be a 1 p.m. Friday in the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Daniel W. Fowler, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call at the McGann Funeral Home until 11 a.m. Friday.

Born on Oct. 16, 1894, in Baraboo, Wis., Mr. Cramer graduated from Madison (Wis.) High School and went on to the University of Wisconsin to receive his Bachelor of Science degree in 1920.
Before coming to South Bend in 1931 to become general agent for Northwestern Life Insurance Co., he was athletic coach at Joliet (Ill.) High School. he also had been athletic coach at Marshall, College, W.Va.
Long active in civic business organizations in South Bend, Mr. Cramer assisted in the City Rescue Mission-News-Times Christmas Fund drive in 1937.
In 1942 he was elected president of the South Bend Citizens, Inc. He was one of the organizers and the first president of the South Bend Managers & General Agents Assn., which was formed in 1948. In 1956 he accepted the chairmanship of the Individual Gifts division of the United Fund Campaign. Prior to that, he had been in charge of the special gifts section of the campaign.
Presbyterian Board Member
A member of the First Presbyterian Church, he had served as president of the board of trustees in 1953 and was chairman of the building fund campaign in 1945 and 1950.
In 1960 he was elected Protestant co-chairman of the South Bend-Mishawaka Roundtable of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, a post he held at the time of his death.
When Mr. Cramer was honored in October, 1949, on his 25th anniversary with Northwestern Mutual of one of the vice presidents of the company pointed out that the agency had vanced from 44th to 11th place in national standing since Mr. Cramer took over the agency.
Survivors Listed
He married Mary E. Brown on Aug. 23, 1920. She survives along with a son, Herbert Jr. of South Bend; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Jane Lippincott of Houston, Tex., and seven grandchildren.
Mr. Cramer was a member of the Indiana Club, South Bend Country Club, Junto Club, Rotary Club, Sigma Nu Fraternity, Masonic Lodge and South Bend Shrine.
He had served in the Army infantry during World War I.
