YM's Athletic Club Founder Dies at 80
George M. Myers; 80, retired former athletic director of the Akron YMCA, died Tuesday at his home in Phoenix, Ariz.
Mr. Myers became physical director of the Y in December, 1905, when it was located where the Sheraton Hotel is now. He organized the Athletic Club when the present building was opened in 1931 and served continuously until his retirement in January 1947.
He was a native of Cincinnati and a graduate of the Chicago Physical Training School at Geneva, Wis.
Many present-day Akron businessmen looked to the Y and Mr. Myers for sports and recreation when they were boys. He compiled the "History of Sports and Athletics" for the Centennial History of Akron in 1925.
He served on various community athletic committees, including the Akron Boxing Commission. In World War I he acted as a physical training instructor of new recruits.
Y baseball, basketball and swimming teams trained by Mr. Myers were prominent throughout the State.
Mr. Myers was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Knights Templar and the Grotto.
He leaves his wife, Mayme of Phoenix; a son, George J. of Akron; daughters , Mrs. Carl H. Kent and Mrs. Jacqueline Boyer of Phoenix; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Services and burial will be Thursday in Phoenix, the Paradise Chapel in charge.
