Mrs. Neal's Son-in-Law Was Coach
Mrs. Mayme Neal of Utica received word of the death Tuesday of her son-in-law, Everett Shelton, 73, former basketball coach and commissioner of the Far Western Athletic Conference. Shelton, a former St. Joseph coach, lived in Sacramento and died suddenly while visiting at the home of his step-son in Capistrano Beach, Calif.
Mr. Shelton coached at the University of Wyoming for 25 years and his teams there won several conference championships and several times went to the National Invitational Tournament.
In 1969, Coach Shelton received the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Award, the highest coaching award in the nation. He had been elected president of the National Basketball Coaches Association in 1959 and that year was named to the Helms Basketball Hall of Fame.
Mr. Shelton is survived by his wife, the former Berniece Neal Foreman; a son, Dr. Steve Shelton of Menninger Clinic, Topeka, Kan.; a half-sister, Mrs. Vernon Fitzsimmons, Cunningham, Kan.; a half-brother, Alva Poland of New York State; two grandchildren, and nieces.
Funeral services and burial will be in Sacramento. Mr. Shelton was born in Cunningham, Kan., and lived in St. Joseph from 1929 to 1936 when he coached basketball and football at Christian Brothers High School.
