Dr. Anderson, Hero in Plague Outbreak, Dies
Services will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the Church o the Recessional, Forest Lawn Memorial-Park, for Dr. Elmer L. Anderson, 75, who is credited with halting an outbreak of the bubonic plague here in 1924.
Dr. Anderson, 351 S. Fuller Ave., died Thursday of a cerebral hemmorhage. At the time of his death he was medical director of the Yellow Cab Co.
Moved Here
After graduating from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, Dr. Anderson served as medical director of a mining company in Alaska, moving here in 1921.
In 1924, while a doctor with the City Health Service, he diagnosed the first case of bubonic plague in an outbreak which claimed 33 lives here. It resulted in rapid control of the disease.
The City Health Commission in 1960 commended Dr. Anderson for the feat which had gone unsung for 36 years.
Dr. Anderson leaves his wife, Helen; brother, Edgar; son, John, of Washington, and a daughter, Mrs. Alan L. Gallon.
