Ex-UF Coach Visscher Dies at Age 66
Ed Visscher was the interim coach at UF for 17 games in 1979-80, and his son later played for Florida
Ed Visscher, who was interim basketball coach at Florida in the 1979-80 season, died Tuesday at Shands after suffering a stroke related to a recent battle with cancer. He was 66.
Visscher built a national prep powerhouse at Long Island Lutheran before taking a job in 1978 as a UF assistant under coach John Lotz. When Lotz was fired 12 games into the 1979-80 season, Visscher took over and UF went 3-14 the rest of the season.
The next year, Visscher took over as executive director at Orlando Luther, where he coached the basketball team for six seasons and took it to two state Final Fours.
Visscher later coached pro teams in Sweden, Denmark and Germany.
Visscher's son, David, lettered as a reserve guard for UF in 1983 and '84 and is a pro basketball coach in Sweden. His other son, Jon, is a financial planner in Gainesville. Jon, a former UF student manager, also is part of the statistician crew at UF home basketball games.
