Doug Mills, former Illinois coach and athletic director, died Friday at a Champaign hospital of heart problems. He was 75.
Mills had coached Illini teams during the late 1930s and early 1940s, including the 1942 and 1943 "Whiz Kids" who won the Big 10. In Mills' 11 years as coach, the Illini won the conference crown three times and finished second once. He was athletic director for more than a quarter century, stepping down in 1967.
Mills played on the Illini football team from 1927 to 1930 and was on the Big 10 championship teams of 1927 and 1928. He was a baseball, football and basketball star at Elgin High School. Mills began his coaching career at Joliet High School.
