Dale D. Davis, 78, Wabash College Coach
Dale D. "Lefty" Davis, 78, of 719 Cumberland Ave., WL, died at St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center at 4:48 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, after a 3-month illness with cancer.
He was born on Aug. 4, 1914, in Flora. His first marriage was to Betty Jane Voorhees. His second marriage was to Esther Jane McClamroch. She survives.
Mr. Davis graduated from Wabash College, where he starred in three sports and later coached. He was inducted into the Wabash Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988.
Before coaching at Wabash, he was a coach and teacher at Thorntown High School. He also played minor league baseball in the Brooklyn Dodgers organization, and he played semi-pro baseball with the Lafayette Red Sox.
A longtime resident of Crawfordsville, he was active in civic affairs and served as president of the school board and president of the Crawfordsville High School Boosters club. He was a member of the Crawfordsville Dramatic Club and was one of the founders of the Crawfordsville Little League.
He lived in West Lafayette the past 28 years and was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a life member of the Lafayette Elks Club and was an avid golfer, fisherman and musician. He retired from Mutual of Omaha in 1979.
Also surviving are seven children, Karen Davis Anderson of Colorado Springs, Colo., Steven V. Davis of Chicago, Dr. H. Jeffrey Davis of Noblesville, Richard Davis of Evanston, Ill., Robert Pollom Murphy of McAllen, Texas and William Pollom of Danville, Ky.; and threes sisters, Naomi Doty of Sullivan, Mildred O'Hara of West Lafayette and Jane Neff of Fort Wayne.
