Simons, Ex-Tulane Grid Great, Dies
Washington (AP) - Claude (Monk) Simons, who scored an 85-yard touchdown run for Tulane University in the first Sugar Bowl football classic, died early yesterday after suffering an apparent heart attack.
Simons was stricken in a downtown hotel while attending the annual convention of the NCAA. He was publicity director for the Sugar Bowl and served as publicity chairman of the New Orleans Mid-Winter Sports Association.
Simons was president of the Sugar Bowl for two terms in 1958-69.
In 1968, he was elected to the National Football Hall of Fame.
Simons' 85-yard run in the first Sugar Bowl Classic on Jan. 1, 1935, helped Tulane defeat Temple, 20-14.
Simons was a four-letter athlete at Tulane - in football, baseball, basketball and track.
He was head football coach at Tulane from 1942-44, athletic director from 1946-47, and director of student activities 1948-49.
Simons was active in a large number of civic organizations, but his name always was first associated with Tulane and it was said he was the spirit of the school's football program.
His nickname "Monk" was handed down from his father.
Claude "Big Monk" Simons who was a trainer for the Tulane football team who steered his son into taking over after him. At first the son was known as "Little Monk" but the name eventually was shortened to just "Monk."
He was 60 when he died.
