Obituary - NABC (December 9, 2003)
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Chuck Noe, who coached basketball at three Virginia colleges and was Virginia Commonwealth's athletic director in the 1970s, died at 79.
He died Monday after a brief illness.
Noe coached Virginia Military Institute, Virginia Tech and Virginia Commonwealth as well as South Carolina.
He was at VMI in the mid-1950s before going to Virginia Tech, where he led the Hokies to a 109-51 record in seven seasons. In 1962, Noe went to South Carolina, where he was 15-21 in two years.
Noe arrived at Virginia Commonwealth in 1970 and was athletic director and basketball coach for six years. His overall record was 95-42 as the Rams made the transition from Division II to Division I during his stay.
"Chuck was truly one of the most knowledgeable coaches I've ever known," former North Carolina coach Dean Smith told the Richmond Times-Dispatch. "I enjoyed talking basketball with him. He was surely great for the game."
After leaving Virginia Commonwealth, he became a familiar voice on radio sports shows until 2000.
A native of Louisville, Ky., Noe played minor league baseball for Double-A San Antonio in 1948. He had been called up by the Boston Red Sox to finish that season but broke his ankle sliding, ending his pro career. ÊÊ
