Biography - Knoxville (TN) Journal (July 8, 1963)
One of the most neglected (publicity-wise) men in Southern football history died last month. I mean Charlie Bernier. An Alabama's athletic director in the early 1920's, he recruited practically all of the material on which Wallace Wade was to rise to fame and fortune. The players were there before Wade left Dan McGugin's Vanderbilt staff to replace Xen Scott at Tuscaloosa. Glacial Wallace, of course, made maximal use of the stuff because he was truly a great coach. But Bernier was the gentleman mainly responsible for hustling up the talent that put the Crimson Tide on the high-seas to gridiron eminence. . . The school was properly grateful. When Bernier retired from coaching at Hampden-Sydney he was brought back to Tuscaloosa and given a lifetime position as director of alumni activities. He held it from 1937 until his death June 22 following a heart attack . . . Bernier hired Hank Crisp in 1921. Crisp recruited and signed Bear in 1931 . . . So Charlie's influence lingers on.
