Mayor for Six Terms also Taught, Coached
Robert Reuss Served North College Hill
by Bob Elkins
Robert J. Reuss, former six-term mayor of North College Hills and a former teacher and coach, died of a heart attack Wednesday. He was 85 and had been a resident at the Seasons Retirement Community in Kenwood since 1987.
A native of the West End, he lived near old Crosley Field, where he sold peanuts and worked at the pass gate and was a batboy for the Reds in the 1920s, said his son, Robert, of Minneapolis.
Mr. Reuss was an alumnus of old Woodward High School. In 1932, he received an education degree from the University of Cincinnati, where he also lettered in basketball, baseball and boxing and won a Golden Gloves championship.
He first came to North College Hill in 1934 and received his law degree at Salmon P. Chase College in 1936.
Mr. Reuss was mayor of North College Hill from 1948 to 1960. He lowered taxes twice during his tenure, the city swimming pool was built during that period and he established the post office in City Hall.
"I was city solicitor at the time," said Judge Harry Klusmeier of the Ohio 1st District Court of Appeals in Cincinnati. "He was a very capable leader, a good organizer and a forceful administrator."
Mr. Reuss became North College Hill High School's first teacher-coach in 1934 and held that job until 1942.
He taught chemistry and science, physical education, coached football, girls and boys basketball, cut the grass and lined the field for a starting salary of $115 a month.
From 1942-44, he was a teacher and basketball coach at Walnut Hill High School. During the same years, he was a basketball coach at UC. He then joined the Navy, was commissioned and held a desk job for two years at the aviation cadet-training school in Northfield, Minn.
After military service, he led Hughes High School to a state baseball championship in 1949 while serving as teacher-coach from 1947-59. He also tried his hand at real-estate sales, taught business law at UC and retired in 1967.
"He was an outgoing, gregarious, never-met-a-person-he-didn't-know type of person," his son said. "When I was a kid he staked out and roped a ring for me and my friends to put the gloves on, but he always emphasized boxing as a sport."
His memberships included College Hill Lodge No. 641 F&AM, Syrian Shrine, UC Athletic Boosters Association and the North College Hill Republican Club.
His wife, Elizabeth Reuss, died in February, 1988.
He is also survived by daughters Mary Hensel of Kenwood, Susan Kalvelage of College Hill and Barbara Reuss of Clarksville, Ohio; brother Carl of College Hill; and five grandchildren.
Memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Seasons Retirement Community, 7300 Dearwester Drive, Kenwood.
